  1. How long do you practice piano a day? a week?
Do you have perfect pitch, or did you have to train your ear?
How much music theory/history do you know?
Have you done any RCM examinations?
Do you ever perform in piano festivals?
Which composers do you feel has effected your compositions?
What notation software do you use?
    What’s your preferred piano brand?

    • 1. mostly 2-3 hours, sometimes only 1 hour.
      2. Yes I have a perfect pitch. I have this when I was born, I didn’t really train or sort.
      3. Not much actually, most of my transcription ideas are inspired by the piano piece I practice like from liszt , chopin or beethoven.
      4. Nope.
      5. rarely, and then I play mostly classical stuff.
      6. Probably liszt and beethoven. Liszt also transcribed a lot of stuff. Classical stuff.
      7. Sibelius 6.It was expensive as hell, but it was worth it.
      8. Steinway. But my personal favorite might be the underrated fazioli

  2. How do you go about transcribing stuff?
I understand it is all about listening to a piece and then penning down all the notes but I am more interested in the details 😀

If not perfect pitched do you actually replay certain parts many times just to get the notes right?

Do you transcribe the main melody melody first, or the chords first, or both together, or is it situational?

Sometimes the bass chords got drowned out, muddied and blurred, in this situation, do you improvise? Use the natural chord progression to find that particular chord? or force your ears to find that blurred chord?

When transcribing, you have problems finding the correct duration of the notes, if not then how do you go about doing it, for example, you know this melody consist of C#, F#, A, G# after listening,
The C# is a 1/4note, F# and A 1/8note, and G#1/4+1/8, do you have trouble finding their durations in this scenario, the 1/4, the 1/8s and the 1/4+1/8.

Do you use a midi keyboard with your notation software when you transcribe? or Do you just key in all the notes slowly with just mouse and keyboard?

    • Of course, I can transcribe something else than anime with an perfect pitch, but, I choose anime because it’s a niche genre and there are only limited anime piano covers on youtube. Covers from pop songs or videogame soundtracks are too common so I don’t really bother with it.
Oh, and I never owned a PS or PS2 or xbox, so I’m not familliar with the FF franchise.

  3. How do you accurately remember all the notes to play, especially in the long and insanely tough pieces like Kuusou Mesogiriwi and Bios?

    • Since I am the arranger of the pieces, I can almost play everything by heart once I have finished the transcription. I always make countless edits on one transcription until I am 100 % satisfied, so it’s only a matter of time, when I can memorise everything.

  4. Hi there, big fan of your works 😀 Just a couple of noob questions:

    1. How long did it take for you to become proficient at the piano, did you self-learn or take
    classes?

    2. What tips do you have for beginners who are starting to learn the piano? (Especially for those who are self-learning, like myself)

    3. What are some of your favourite piano pieces? Can be from anywhere.

    • 1. I started playing the piano when I was 6 years old, and now I’m 21.
I took classes in a regular musical school.
      2. hmm… you have to ask tehishter, since I did not learn it myself. I actually admire everyone who learned to play a instrument on their own.
3.there are too many to count, but I think one of my personal favorite pieces is “kinderszenen” by Schumann.

  5. I’m a HUGE fan of yours… just wondering if you have time to answer these questions…
    1. Out of curiosity, how long did it take for you to transcribe Bios? I must say, this arrangement was truly a masterpiece, as well as how epic your videos was!! 😀
I’m still trying to play it, but I just can’t play the last page, due to the evil jumps with both hands >_< (its like twice as hard than the rest of the piece, good to finish with a BANG! …haha)
    2. What got you into watching anime?
    3. When did you begin transcribing music (or what age were you when you began to)?
    4. (random) What is/are your favourite subject/s that you study at school?

    • 1. I need roughly 6 hours for one transcription + 1-4 hours of editing until I am satisfied. Bios took probably 8 hours.
      2. I have a little sister who have a lot of mangas. So one day, I snucked into her room and read a random manga. It was chobits and I can still remember, how much I liked it, since it was something different than “dragonball” . I googled Chobits, because I wanedt more information, and the first result was a youtube link with a subtitled chobits episode. I watched it completely and eventually I wanted to watch more. The rest is history… (I used to stream anime until I discovered torrents)
      3. Since I was born with an absolute pitch, I already tried to cover some backstreet boys when I was 8.
      4. I think the only subjects I really liked was either math or biology

    • I really like Osu, and I used to play this with my little sister. I don’t play much video games, since I don’t own a console. The last game I played (and liked) was portal 2 and cave story.

  6. Hi
Just curious… but how far can you stretch on the piano (C to E or smth like that)? Do u have any tips on increasing finger span? I can barely stretch from C to E… ;_; And I don’t like rolling chords since it will sound slightly different.
(I’ve heard that Rachmaninoff (A Russian pianist) could reach up to 2 octaves or smth like that… o_o)

Arh…and is it possible if you could post videos of yourself playing your own transcriptions for Sociometry and Only My Railgun? 😀

    Thanks!

    • I can stretch a tenth (C-E). And increasing finger span… I don’t really know. Either you are born with big hands or not. Sorry :/
Liszt also had a incredible finger span, aside from Rachmaninoff.

Oh and thanks for reminding me of Sociometry and “Only my reailgun”. I completely forgot them, I wrote it back then when I didn’t have a youtube account.
      I’ll upload it eventually.

  7. I’m assuming that most of us do not have perfect pitch, so I want to ask if that characteristic affects your musical listening experience in anyway? Like if you’re watching a fan instrumental (maybe piano, violin, etc) of a piece of work, do you just cringe if you notice a wrong note or if the instrument is slightly untuned that it can’t be recognized with normal hearing? I’m not sure about the details of the perfect pitch characteristic, so if I am incorrect, you can also talk about the misconceptions of perfect pitch hearing.

    • A good question lol. Yes, I notice immediately if the intonation is slightly off, it’s especially worse with violins. It really irritates me, if one instrument is constantly playing wrong. Also: I am really really bad in tranposing pieces, because of the perfect pitch.

  8. What kind of music do you like the most?
What has inspired you to learn playing the piano?
Do you also play any other instruments?
Do you have any other hobbies besides music and anime?

I really admire your piano covers and enjoy watching them! Please keep up the good work!

    Many greetings from Germany!

    • 1. Classical music mostly, but of course I enjoy other genre like house, RnB, J-pop.. I also really like electronic music (but FUCK dubstep)
      2. My parents forced me. That’s the standart fare if you are 6 yeaers old … but of course I grow to like it lol
      3. I tried to learn the guitar, but I guess my fingers are too sensitive…
      4. Hm, I really like movies, but I have to admit, I spend most of my time on the internet or going out with friends. I don’t do any sport…

      Oh and
woher kommst du denn, wenn ich mal fragen darf? :3

      • My little brother also started at the age of six. He’s eight years old now and I hope he’ll keep going – though he is very lazy when it comes to practicing!

        Thanks for answering my questions!

Ah, ich komme aus dem schönen Nordrhein-Westfalen. 🙂

  9. First I must say I am thoroughly impressed by your work! Your accuracy and style is very inspirational to me. I’m guessing by your sterling transcriptions you have perfect pitch. I do as well. 🙂
-If you do have perfect pitch, when did you first realize it? I have always been good at playing by ear on piano, but I starting perfecting my ears when I was 14 when I found out that there was such a thing as perfect pitch.
-What period of the four major classical periods do you enjoy listening to? Playing?
-What are your thoughts on Debussy and Ravel?
-Would you pretty please critique my transcription of a song from the durarara!! soundtrack? I tried to keep it as close to the original as possible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojykZsUTxpc
-I also tried out this one from Kare Kano. It’s a little rusty on the performance and I kinda played a little with the bass line: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfMBdmqv5Y8

Your comments would be much appreciated! Please keep transcribing for us aspiring musicians. Thank you very much. 🙂

  10. If you’re looking for the most frequently asked questions, here they are…

Do you like hot or cold drinks?
Have you ever decided you’d want to be famous?
    Did you own a PS2?
    Do you dislike dubstep?

    More importantly…

Can you accurately tie a tie without a mirror?
How much RAM do you have on your computer?
Is Sibelius that great? (My theory teacher uses it too)
    How tall are you?
Do you prefer quiet or social people/girls/guys?

    Even more importantly…

    Do you enjoy experiencing Jazz?
Have you taken out the trash recently?
Do you like red or purple better for clothing?
Do you think glasses make people more attractive?

    thanks and good day ❤

    • 1. Cold always win. Always.
      2. Nah not really. I just like anime and I like playing the piano. That’s all. I’m a socially awkward guy in real life. I don’t think I can handle it if I am “famous” or sort…
      3. I am fully satisfied with Sibelius 6. It’s really great.
      4. 1,85m
      5. I prefer social people, since I am pretty quiet myself
      6. i can’t play jazz unfortunately. I’m currently self teaching my self some jazz chords.
      7. Okay you got me there. brb
      8. purple is actually pretty fashionable recently. But red… not, too agressive.
      9. I don’t know… I actually hate my glasses. But I also hate contact lenses, guess I have to stick with my glasses…

    • 1. I actually used to listen to a lot of vocaloid music, but that was years ago.. I think I can’t stand the electronic voice anymore.
      2. Nope.
      3. I’m fine, thanks.

  11. Can you transcribe the OST in GUILTY CROWN NO.15 begin from 15:10 to 17:20!? It played when Hare die . Since I heard this song I repeat and repeat , this song is so beautiful so that I can’t forget it. I’m practicing the other two songs you transcribed from GUILTY CROWN YOR ARE AWESOME!! sorry for my bad Engilsh ,I’m a Taiwanese,Ivisit this web everyday expect you will post more new song you transcribe

  12. I’d like to know if you have composed your own songs!:3 I think it has to be just great to compose or improvise with your skill~

    Ps: hearing you from Barcelona!

    • well well, tehishter ^^ have this happened to you before?
Well, I really depends how offensive the “negative” comment is. If it’s just randumb swearing, then I’ll just ignore it. But if it’s hurting my pride, I feel very down.

      • lol yeah it’s happened, but it’s years ago. Now, any dislike can just go fuck themselves, it means nothing to me. Constructive criticism is ok.
I’ve gotten some musically detailed, offensive bashing in my past account, so was wondering if you experienced the same thing

also. ur so tall and handsome :3

  13. How’s your stance on classical music? People are telling me that the best pianists are classically trained (and I can’t argue) but I just can’t seem to play obscure classical Bach and Beethoven etc. as easily as I can play anime/video game songs.

    • Most of my inspiration of transcribing comes from classical music. So naturally, I play a lot of classical works. Currently working on “waldsteinsonate” by Beethoven.

If you are looking for easier classical piano pieces try Shumann or Schubert. They are perfect for beginners, since they are not too difficult to play and the music itself is easys to understand.

      • Late to this questioning thread, but have you watched Occult Academy? They use the Waldstein motives pretty often in their soundtrack (fitting for an anime which takes place in a school called ‘Waldstein Academy’, heh).

  14. Will you ever finish Futuristic Imaginations? @_@ Heh, never mind. I know the answer is no. But I’m still curious as to what you already had. If I recall correctly, you could “play the song on the piano on a whim.” I’d be interested in hearing it, even if it meant not being able to play it myself…

  15. 1) Do you still play Katawa Shoujo?
    2) What songs do you usually play on the piano? Like classical and stuff.
    3) What made you transcribe anime music?
    4) What subjects are you taking in school?
    5) Do you have any tips on how to do fast ass runs?

    • 1. nah. Once I finished all routes, I lost interest.
      2. I play mostly classical stuff like you said. Beethoven Sonatas, Chopin etudes, Schumann Kreisleriana, Liszt rhapsodies…
      3. I have always been covering music of all sorts, but as soon as I got my notation software, I decided to upload some videos too and provide anime music sheets. The reason? hm, because simply I like anime? . But I think Josh’s anime sheet collection have inspired me the most to make my own transcriptions. http://josh.agarrado.net/music/anime/
      4. Sorry but my current occupation is a secret :3
      5. practise in different rhythms. play it slowly at first. then increase speed. Another cool trick is if you try to play the passage “backwards”. It can help a lot. And above all: more practice ^^

  16. Could you do Trinity Blood ending and opening ? 😀
    1)What are your Top 100 Animes ?
    2) what are you Top 10 Anime Openings ?
    3) When do you started playing Piano ?
    4) where do you live (country) ? 😀

  17. Do you mind playing something like anime medleys and make the sheets out of it like the one that Josh did?

What type of girls do you like? (Something like Tsundere or Cooldere?)

PS: Sorry if my English sounds impolite. I’m Asian so I don’t know how to ask in a polite way >-<

    • 1. hm, I think Josh is already doing a great job with the medley he does every year, do I don’t think to do this as well.
      2. hm, difficult. But I think cooldere. (you actually meant “kuudere” right?

      • Sorry for the misspelling > <'' Actually I like Kuudere girl too. (Nagato Yuki, She is) By the way, do you still watch Fate Zero? I saw you made a transcription of OP 1 but I can't find it on your animelist.

  18. If you could choose anywhere in the world to live where would it be and why?
What are your top 5 favorite novels or series?
    Favorite study within mathematics?

Also thanks for the suggestion on watching Guilty Crown! I love the music and its very well done for an anime! I’m working through the first season now…

    • 1. hm…. veeery difficult question. I don’t really know. I am happy enough with my currently place. My dream is alway to go on a world tour.
      2. See my anime list.
      3. I didn’t like mathematics that much…

  19. Don’t know if you’re still taking questions but I’ll give it a shot anyways.

    1. Where were you raised as a child?
    2. Do you speak any languages other than English and German?
    3. What genre of anime do you like?
    4. Do you play any video games? If so, which ones?

    • 1. I was raised in germany, and I have chinese origins.
      2. Yes, chinese, obviously.
      3. I like slice-of-life series the most and I dislike Harem series.
      4. Well, I don’t many games that much. I think my last few games were portal 2, minecraft and starcraft 2.

  20. 1) Can you give the link to the full picture in your banner (Akari of Aria)?
    2) Will you watch Sakamichi no Apollon from this season? It’s about a classical pianist potentially joining a Jazz group (I recommend).
    3) Do you think you’ll ever take requests again in the future?
    4) Have you ever heard of the song from Guilty Crown: Kimi Sora Kiseki by Chelly.
    5) Are you willing to do paid transcriptions in the future? If so, what would your rates be? I believe Josh does them too.
    6) What do you think of Josh’s transcriptions, are they too simple? Do you think having him do a paid transcription is not worth the money?

    Thanks,

    • 1. Sorry, for being a little bit late, but here it is:
      http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/show/1038389/1girl-aqua_eyes-aria-bird-blurry-depth_of_field-fr
      2. Yes, currently watching it.
      3. I really don’t know. But if I’m bored, and there isn’t anything worth to transcribe, then yes.
      4. nah.. you know… I actually dropped guilty crown at ep 17… it was just not my thing.
      5. Who knows? I am not really interested in money though. hm, I think I would charge 15$-25$ for each transcription depending on difficulty.
      6. ooooh, very dangerous question you ask here. I think despite the simplicity, Josh’s transcriptions are very good because they usually capture the essential features of the original piece.

    • 1. I practice 2-3 hours every day. Go to a music store and buy a finger exercise book if you want help. They are really useful.
      2. I honestly don’t know. I really listen to any kind of music except dubstep and hard metal. I was very fond of backstreet boys and eminem though.
      3. Oh.. a remix of mozart and…. dang it it’s dubstep. No, thank you.

      • I know you dislike dubstep but did you even listen to the Mozart remix?!?

  21. Hey, just curious what degree you actually take at university (if at university)?

Also, I heard you’ve finished Nichijou a while back. I’m currently watching Gintama and just wondering if it’s similar and worth watching then?

Awesome covers. Keep up the good work!

    • Actually, just realised that you want to keep your current occupation a secret. In which case, could you even give us ‘hint’ in the form of a general subject area that you ‘may’ be doing at the moment? (e.g. sciences, humanities, languages) ;D

  22. Have you ever heard the shooting game “Touhou”?
There are a lot of amazing BGM.
I really want to hear your arrange of these BGM.

    • Marasy9, another famous youtube pianist, has done plenty of them and I thinks he is doing a really great job already. Besides, my transcription focus is anime not touhou.
I suck in the danmaku games, but I really loved hisoutensoku.

  23. 1. What games do you play – if you play any?
    2. What type of piano do you own/usually play?

Can’t really think of any more questions other that, please keep up the good work! (don’t have to if you don’t want to though; not going to complain about a free service).

      • Yes. I’ve also seen his older videos when he uploaded videos on an upright Yamaha. Regardless, in regards to the second question it was more of a question that could appear in his FAQ. The first question is the one that is asked merely out of curiosity.

    • 1. recently I haven’t been playing games at all, beside some visual novels (little busters)
      2. Steinway and Yamaha, but steinway is the better choice naturally.

  24. Sry newbie here, Do you have tips of learning how to play piano w/o having a piano? like Image training or smth like tat.

    • Step 1: Well, you can learn music theory, familiarize yourself with notations, and maybe relative pitch training
Step 2: finger exercises perhaps? like, I’m not sure, but perhaps stuffs like pen spinning may help your fingers become more responsive
That’s about as far as you can get though, so…
Step 3: save some money, get a job to buy a piano, or go to somewhere with a piano that you can play with (idk, music clubs, piano classes etc)
Yea, in the end a piano is still needed to train fingers & wrists’ strength & familiarity with the keyboard layout.
      Sorry to disappoint.

      • Thx for ur help, do u know any websites that teaches music theory and those notations and pitch training?

  25. So i heard you’re a touhou fag :>
    Whats your favorite game?
    Have you ever cleared lunatic?
    Last game you played?

    Grüße aus BW ^^

    • I really suck in the danmaku games, but i love hisoutensoku.
I think it’s more fascinating watching other people playing lunatic and looking at the beautiful bullet patterns, than playing it myself.

  26. First of all I’d like to say Thank you for creating such beautiful arrangements, you are someone who I look up to.
    Anyway
I’d like to know how you practice piano, .e.g Playing scales repeatedly and other things
How do increase your finger speed when playing piano?
Have you ever had trouble playing two hands at the same time(Yes I know it’s quite a dumb question but it’s something I myself am having plenty of trouble with.

    • well, It would take up too much time to answer all your questions, but I want to encourage you to visit your local music school and take some piano lessons. You should at least give it a try, because a well trained teacher can give you more helpful advice than me. Just go and ask!
Or just google “piano tutorial” etc etc.

  27. Have you looked at Hiiro No Kakera? if you have and dropped please just listen to the opening, it is gorgeous and I’m sure you will like it.

    • I don’t transcribe the opening of shows I am not watching, sorry. ( id ropped it halfway of episode 1 because Iit was not my cup of tea)

  28. hi there i hope you’re still answering questions,
but first off i admire ur transcriptions =)

    1. What makes you drop transcriptions you’re doing?
    2. Are you watching Hyouka this season?
    3. Do you watch classic anime?
    4. Who’s(‘re) your favorite anime music composer(s)?
    5. How do you rate anime–could you rank by story, visual, music, staff etc?

thank you so much and im always waiting for your transcriptions

    • Sorry for the late reply, didn’t see that comment until now

      1. If I am running out of ideas, how to make the sheet more “interesting” than your average transcription, then I’ll drop it. Almost all my transcriptions have some hidden “idea” or “motiv”. I always make very high demands on the quality of my transcriptions, and if I am not satisfied with a sheet, I drop it. (my dropped list contains almost 20 sheets now…). Or another reason is, I dropped the anime before I could finish the transcription.
      2. Yes of course, or otherwise, I wouldn’t do the sheet for the opening 😉
      3. Do you mean, “old school” anime, that aired in the nineties? Nah, not really, because I haven’t got the time.
      4. Very difficult question. There are tons of talented composers out there, but my first two picks would be Yuki Kajiura and Michiru Oshima
      5. Mostly by the characters. If the characters are annoying or uninteresting in a series, I will drop the series, because I simply don’t care about the series anymore. Also, I carefully choose which genre of Anime I watch: I avoid Harem and Ecchi, and prefer slice-of-life and comedy the most.
      6. Fanart are always by danbooru.
      http://danbooru.donmai.us/
      warning, not safe for work.

  29. Hi! Thanks for sharing all your transcriptions with us! It’s awesome!
What gave you the motivation to spend so many hours doing transcribing and giving your transcription for free? When you do you usually do your transcription? Are you studying now?

    • The motivation… hmm….. I don’t really know. Mostly because I want to fill in the gap, when Josh, the grandfather of all anime transcriptions, haven’t been so active anymore. And because simply I am a anime fan, I have a rare absolute pitch, and I have a notation software. So, why not ^^ My transcription is and will always be free, because I don’t think anyone would actually pay for a transcription.
I usually do my transcription on the weekend, when I have some time.
And my occupation is still a secret ;P

      • Yeah music is not my cup of tea… Im the kind of guy who is always searching for good music channels and i found one 😉

      • Haha! 🙂 You are one of the rare pianist who transcribe and perform almost perfectly on youtube! Salute!! I can say that the pieces which you transcribe are really challenging and beautifully transcribe! And I can find some tinge of classical influence in it! Keep it up and congrats on your 10,000 subscribers!! It’s indeed something to celebrate about!!

Yeah, your perfect pitch really do come in handy!! I myself is a piano lover and do sometimes transcript down music to teach my students upon their request. However I do not have perfect pitch so I take much longer time to transcript it. Currently I am trying to get myself to do some simple transcriptions. I haven found which area of music I want to focus on yet. I need to find some motivation to kick start it! haha!

Wa, your occupation is a secret!! Haha!! Shall wait for the secret to be revealed in time to come! haha!

  30. What does the ‘nz’ after your alias stand for? Is it just a compulsive thought that was generated or does it have an acronym relation?
When I first saw it (the blog) I was like ‘Animenz = Anime New Zealand?’
I was skeptical so I surfed the blog and found out it from Germany (Okay.jpg).
But really I’m not so surprised at all because there is only 1 person besides me that watches anime… literally he watches all of it; even if it’s stupid, boring and/or terrible. It’s pretty much a ritual to complete -any- anime he has started watching. I think the only ones he avoids are one’s that involve the possibility of shōnen-ai.
Anyway that was off track but I’d just like to know what the ‘nz’ means from your alias if you could. 😀

    • Wow, you are probably the first one, that asked me the origin of my alias.
The story goes like this: initially, I wanted to spell “animes” (I know I know, plural of “Anime” don’t exist) but then I accidently made a typo, so it became “animens”. And then I just used the leetspeech and made it to “Animenz”. And coincidentally, it’s the same acronym as “Anime New Zealand”. Oh well, it cannot be helped.
Oh and I also used to watch everything, but now, six years later, I regard myself as a proficient anime PRO™, so I can easily tell within the first 10 minutes, whether the show is shit or not. ^^

      • Yeah.. I know what you mean.
Although I’d probably give the anime a chance if I really like your or tehishter’s transcriptions.
Oh and I got myself into watching a mainstream anime a while back (e.g. ‘Fairytail’), I got to episode 40, quizzed myself on how long this is going to go for and then stopped. Haven’t touched another mainstream since. (Pokerface.jpg)
